The Dr. Sylma story begins with love and concern for my kids and my young patients. As parents, we searched for skincare products safe enough to use on our kids’ sensitive skin, and couldn’t find many that we trusted. As a pediatrician, I know my patients’ parents have similar worries about product safety and their children’s health. Childhood skin issues like chronic eczema, allergic dermatitis, painful skin rashes, and dry sensitive skin, are so common these days. Many parents have real concerns about what to use on their children’s skin. I realized there was a real need for quality skincare for babies and children with eczema and sensitive skin. So, I decided to create a line of skincare products that actually work and that parents can trust. That’s when Dr. Sylma was born.
Well, my family and childhood friends know me by my middle name, Sylma. It’s not a common name in Latin America (I was born and raised in Puerto Rico), but my dad chose it for me, which makes it very special. When I moved to the United States, I was always called by my first name, Maria, which felt unfamiliar at first, but it stuck with me throughout my college years and professional life. So when it came to naming this new skincare company, I felt that reclaiming my childhood name was the most natural thing to do, and that’s how ‘Dr. Sylma’ was born…
At Dr. Sylma, we create healthy products for healthy families. Skincare should be safe, gentle enough for a newborn, and worry-free. We know that being a parent isn’t always easy. That’s why we believe that health and wellness products should be transparent about their ingredients and make your life easier, not more difficult. Parents’ concerns should be heard and truly valued by companies. At Dr. Sylma, we strive to care for our customers in the same way our founder, Dr. Maria Sylma Tweed, cares for her patients. Finally, we believe that what you put on your body (and your kids’) matters just as much as the healthy, natural and nourishing food you put inside.
